Four to six weeks out
- Confirm your moving date, or the window you are working to if settlement is not locked in.
- Request removal quotes and check what each one includes.
- Start a room-by-room list of what is going, what is being sold and what is being thrown out — our decluttering before packing guide sets out the order that works best.
- Book leave for moving day if you need it — a weekday move is usually easier to schedule.
- If you are renting, give notice and diarise the final inspection date.
Two to three weeks out
- Order cartons, paper, bubble wrap and tape, or ask for them to be included with your move.
- Book the service lift and loading dock at either end if an apartment is involved.
- Arrange mail redirection with Australia Post.
- Book electricity, gas, internet and water connections and disconnections.
- Start packing anything you will not need before the move: books, décor, out-of-season clothing.
The final week
- Confirm arrival time, addresses and access details with your removalist.
- Run down the fridge and freezer, and defrost the freezer the night before.
- Dismantle anything you have agreed to dismantle yourself, and bag the screws to the item.
- Pack an essentials box: chargers, medication, tools, toilet paper, kettle, a change of clothes.
- Label every carton with the room it belongs in at the new address, not the old one.
Moving day
- Clear a path from the front door to the truck and secure pets away from the loading area.
- Walk the crew through the house and point out anything fragile or that is not going.
- Keep valuables, documents and keys with you rather than on the truck.
- Do a final walkthrough of every cupboard, the garage and the yard before you leave.
- At the new address, direct cartons room by room so you are not shifting them twice.
